Luminary beginner guide

Welcome to the world of Luminary. This guide covers the opening hours and the basics you need to survive the OpenZone, whether you are playing alone or with friends. It is written with new players in mind, so expect practical advice rather than deep lore.

First steps

Your first session in Luminary is short but important. It sets up your character and teaches you how the world moves around you. Follow these steps in order:

• Create your character in the character creator. Take your time, but do not worry if you change your mind later. Appearance can be adjusted at a later point, but stats and starting class matter more for your build.

• Learn movement in the OpenZone. Walk, climb, swim, and glide. Each movement type has its own stamina cost, so practice switching between them early. The OpenZone is large, and knowing how to traverse it efficiently saves you a lot of time.

• Complete the intro combat tutorial. Early enemies are weak and forgiving, but they are still good practice for the real-time combat system. Focus on landing a few hits, then blocking and dodging.

• Open your inventory and equip better gear from rewards. You will receive starter equipment after the tutorial. Compare stats, not just rarity. A common weapon with a better damage range can beat a rare one with a bad roll.

• Visit town and learn upgrade basics. The blacksmith and upgrade station are in the first town. Upgrading starter gear is a good way to get stronger before you find better loot, and it is cheaper than you might expect.

Combat basics

Luminary uses real-time combat, but it is designed to be forgiving. You have health, stamina, and a dodge roll. The most important rule is simple: do not stand still.

• Use block and dodge to avoid damage. Blocking reduces incoming damage but drains stamina. Dodging completely ignores damage if timed well. Against fast enemies, dodge sideways. Against heavy attacks, block and then counter.

• Switch weapons mid-fight when enemy types change. You have multiple weapon slots. Some enemies are weak to slashing, others to blunt damage. Do not stick to one weapon just because it has higher numbers on paper.

• Explore before rushing main objectives. Hidden treasures, shrine upgrades, and unique gear are scattered off the main path. A short detour can give you a significant advantage in the next story fight.

Solo vs co-op

Luminary is fully playable solo, and the game does not force you into multiplayer at any point. The difficulty scales based on your party size, so you are never underpowered by playing alone.

Co-op supports up to three friends with drop-in and drop-out. There is no session host lock, and progress saves for everyone in the party. To invite, open the Steam overlay and send a game invite while you are in a town or at a safe camp. You can also join a friend's world from the main menu.

Settings tip

Before you sink hours into a long session, open the settings menu and check your controls. Luminary supports full rebinding for both keyboard and controller.
